Do you like heading out with friends? Or is an alone time the key to your happiness? A recent study, published at the British Journal of Psychology, has shown that intelligent people are less satisfied with common socialization with friends.
The British Psychological Society conducted a study, which included 15.000 participants, at the age of 18 – 28, who were asked about their socialization, situation, happiness, etc.
The results of the study have shown that people, who live in cities, are less happy than those who live in rural areas. In fact, people were less happy if areas of larger popularity density. In addition, people experienced greater satisfaction if they encounter their friends more often.
According to the scientists, this is a result of the ‘savanna theory of happiness’, which means that people came from close, hunter-gathered tribes, which set up the foundation for what makes people happier today.
Life on the African savanna has been slightly different from city life. Finally, the average people are living in smaller towns and commonly socialize with their friends. However, the contrary is true for very intelligent people.
REASONS THAT SHOW THAT PEOPLE WHO LIKE SPENDING TIME ON THEIR OWN ARE MORE INTELLIGENT
1. Spending time on your own will increase your productivity
When we are in a company, our priorities and aims are distracted by other people. However, when we are alone, we have time to think about things that are important to us. Thinking helps us to determine our goals and motivate us to go on in order to achieve them.
2. Spending time on your own will increase your confidence
Unconfident people are not able to make their own decisions, and they rely on other people. However, spending time alone will stimulate you to make decisions. If you are on your own, you can ignore other people’s opinions and ideas, and concentrate on your own thoughts. You determine all the advantages and disadvantages so that you can make the best decision.
3. Spending time on your own will increase your creativity
If we are in a company, we do the same things as other people. However, when we are alone, we can do what we want. Some people enjoy cooking, writing reading, whereas other people like painting or drawing. There are numerous ways to be creative, so when we are alone we can express our individual abilities and skills.
4. Spending time on your own will help you solve problems
When we reflect on our problems, we came to the best solutions. Spending time alone helps us to study problems and find possible solutions for them. We think about the causes of the problem, as well as the different ways in which we can solve it.
5. Spending time on your own will clear your mind
Our mind is often filled with information from social media, work, family or friends. We sometimes need time to take rest and think about our life. Spending time alone will help you clear your mind and calm down.
6. Spending time on your own gets rid of stress and anxiety
A great number of people, who suffer from anxiety, like spending time on their own to calm down and relax. When we are alone, we do not have to listen to other people’s problems. We can focus only on relaxation.
7. Spending time on your own will increase your independence
Spending time on your own will increase your independence. When we are alone, we can concentrate on our progress, problems, which will make us more independent.
8. Spending time on your own will help you to have things done
When you are with other people, it is difficult to work on the to-do list. However, if you are on your own, you have more time to focus on your to-do list and get greater achievements when you are not disturbed.
According to psychologists, there are different reasons for this. Maybe highly intelligent people require more space to be innovative and creative? Or maybe spending time on socializing with friends detracts them from their happiness?
Nevertheless, the studies have set up more questions than answers. Does the urban style cause unhappiness in cities, or unhappy people are determined to live in urban cities?
Surely, preference and intelligence are closely related to each other, but does one cause the other? Are people more intelligent because they socialize with friends less or they do not socialize often because they are intelligent? However, spending time alone is good for people, and gives them a chance to calm down and recharge.
